The Advanced Test
The Advanced Test was run in the afternoon after the completion of the SGWT. There was an entry of 19 dogs. 2 English Springers, 9 Welsh Springers, 3 Clumbers, 2 Fields, 1 Cocker, and 2 American Cockers. For this test the judges were using cold game, and they had a fresh duck for each dog as a seen retrieve, and a rabbit as an unseen retrieve. The dogs were once again required to show their hunting ability. Then to retrieve the duck to the left as the seen retrieve marked to gunfire, and the rabbit as the unseen retrieve. The standard was very high and the competition fierce, and an excellent run from Mr Alec Geddes' ESS Debanza Heilan Dancer saw him to overall third place at the end of the day. An outstanding run from Mr Bill Ironside's American Cocker - Combleywood Party Piece at Belcrum saw them take the top spot.

The Novice Test

The Novice Test had an excellent entry of 11 dogs and 19 bitches. Of the dogs 4 were ESS, 4 WSS, 2 Clumber and 1 Cocker, and in the bitches were 5 ESS, 7 WSS, 4 Cockers, 2 Clumbers and 1 American Cocker. Russell Mosedale was in for a busy day's judging. His requirement was for the dogs to walk to heel a distance of some 25 yds, sit and stay whilst the handler returned to the peg, then to recall. During the recall a distraction dummy was thrown, and the dogs were to ignore it. A short hunt up was followed by a seen retrieve marked to gunfire, then a blind retrieve of some 25 yds was to complete the test. Each dog was marked on each exercise set. The Dinner

As is customary the final "hurdle" to be scaled was the dinner which is held at The Lady Anne's Hotel, Stamford, in the evening. Some 30 people sat down in the hospitable enviroment of the Hotel, and ate the traditional dish of roast beef and yorkshire pudding, which was accompanied by wine for those that did not have to face a long drive home. The atmosphere was very friendly, and conversation lively. Our Judge Mr Cooke proved himself a most entertaining after dinner speaker recounting tales of time spent both judging and trialing his own dogs.
